Located on the east coast of the Great Barrier Island, Storm Cottage is a small contemporary home designed as a getaway for a single family. Designed by Fearon Hay Architects, the timber box home is cladded in dark-stained wood planks and completed by a set of metal screens to cover the windows. Inside the home, walls and floors are completely covered in oiled oak planks for a warm contrast to the dark exterior.
The interior includes a set of two symmetrical bedrooms flanking a central living space. Special attention was taken when designing the home to limit the scale and keep the ‘cottage’ feeling. The house is completely off the grid, powered by solar panels and water collection systems.
